Funds of up to $4 000 are available each year to support attendance by an ALIA member at the Aurora Leadership Institute. The Aurora Foundation conducts the institute which aims to assist future leaders in the library and associated cultural and information industry to maximise leadership skills and potential.

The purpose of the scholarship is to enable an ALIA member to attend the Institute where this would otherwise be difficult due to the financial commitment required.

The scholarship is open to personal financial members of ALIA who meet the following criteria:

meet the Aurora criteria;

are members of ALIA;

provide evidence of personal commitment and contribution to ALIA [1]; and

include a statement (one page maximum) outlining how they would expect to contribute effectively to the profession and to ALIA as a result of attending Aurora.

ALIA members who wish to be considered for the scholarship must follow the procedures below:

apply to Aurora as set out in the Aurora Foundation’s call for nominations;

indicate in their application to the Aurora Foundation that they wish to be considered for the ALIA Aurora Scholarship.

The Aurora selection committee will make a recommendation to the last meeting of the calendar year of the ALIA Board of Directors concerning the winner of the ALIA Scholarship.

Information about how to apply for the Aurora Institute will be accessible when it becomes available later in the year.

The successful recipient(s) of the scholarship will be required to:

prepare a report on the Aurora experience for the benefit of the broader ALIA community. The report will be presented to the next meeting of the Board of Directors (usually May) and may be published in an appropriate ALIA publication and/or posted to ALIA e-prints. Such a report will make due acknowledgment of support received from ALIA to enable attendance at Aurora;

if appropriate, make a presentation on the Aurora experience at an ALIA event and be prepared to assume all costs associated with attending such an event.

Scholarship applicants should note carefully that applications for the Aurora Institute are not held over from one year to the next.

[1] Personal commitment and contribution to ALIA includes but is not necessarily limited to service to the Association as:

member of committee or policy advisory group;

convenor, treasurer, secretary or active committee member of an ALIA group;

member of organising committee of a major conference, seminar or symposium.

Abstract
There have been many studies using web logs that calculate where users of
scholarly resources were referred from, but this approach doesn’t indicate
where those users started their research, merely the details of the last “hop”
before hitting a content website. This research repeats an earlier study
performed in 20051 by Scholarly Information Strategies (for whom the authors

Abstract
There have been many studies using web logs that calculate where users of
scholarly resources were referred from, but this approach doesn’t indicate
where those users started their research, merely the details of the last “hop”
before hitting a content website. This research repeats an earlier study
performed in 20051 by Scholarly Information Strategies (for whom the authors
were consultants) that actually asks researchers about their preferred start
points. The subtle shifts in user preferences provide a valuable insight into
user navigation, the features that they find useful in publisher web sites, and
the role and effectiveness of library technologies. Readers are more likely to
arrive within a journal web site at the article or abstract level than ever before
and this has significant implications for publisher web site design. As a
consequence some of the features of publisher web sites may become
harder to find and, as more functionality transitions to the reader’s preferred
starting point, some of the features may also become less relevant to the
researcher. The most highly sought-after features of journal web sites are
content alerting services, but not personalisation and not search functions.
These findings shed light on how publishers should engineer their web sites
to meet reader navigational behaviour.

Abstract
Over recent years there has been considerable confusion over the use of the term ‘e-book’, and this article examines the variety of definitions used to date while proposing a definitive construct. Beginning by examining the definitions of ‘book’, the paper moves on to consider the essential element of a book – the content, and to examine publishing and structural aspects of e-books, as well as their place in libraries, before arriving at a final definition. The definition and its derivation embrace all of the issues that affect the way in which e-books are understood and used today. In conclusion, the article looks at both the genesis of e-books, and the stage of acceptance and adoption that they have reached, with brief reference to 3rd-generation e-book readers available at the time of writing.
